Space Traveler Discloses Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of Deluge of Harassment Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also featured high-profile passengers.

The mission was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a social media post, describing a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.

She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in female health science and performed experiments during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was drowned out under the deluge of sexist vitriol.

She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following reaching space, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose support helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she said.

She noted that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had come out of the experience, such as increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

About the Mission

The self-operating spacecraft launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.

The group of women also comprised accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.

The venture behind the mission is a private space firm established by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
