A man who laced candy with sleeping medication and gave them to minors at a youth camp in the area has pleaded guilty to sexual crimes against two young males who were between nine and ten.

The defendant was arrested after eight minors and one adult fell ill at the location in the summer month.

The elderly man, from the Nottinghamshire area, confessed to a total of 17 charges when he was present at the judicial center on recently.

However, he refused to admit one of the sexual offences he was facing, which was involving a nine-year-old child.

The defendant was remanded in custody ahead of a subsequent court date on November 28th.

'Treat game'

Mary Prior KC, prosecuting, outlined the criminal behavior to the judicial body.

She explained his targets were children from difficult backgrounds who were participating in a summer program which he managed.

The defendant conducted a "treat game" with the children, the prosecutor stated, in which he would access the boys' rooms when they were settling down and ask them to consume candy "as quickly as they can".

She informed the proceedings the man had conducted this practice with the young males "for many years", and children had previously fallen ill the subsequent day.

She stated the man had been successful in rationalizing this repeatedly as the youngsters being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepchild had concerns in July 2025.

The legal representative added: "In the summer" his family member had concerns about the activities, with valid cause.

"They resolved" to investigate in the defendant's belongings."

The legal counsel stated objects including infant oil, petroleum jelly and injection devices were located, and his stepson contacted the authorities about his concerns.

She explained the defendant went on to conduct the "candy game" with six children that time - July 26th - and they were all ill the following morning.

"The police had not arrived by that time," she added.

The oversight body, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, previously told that it was investigating law enforcement's management of the incident.

The prosecutor stated the minors were struggling to walk due to being ill, so the stepson contacted the police once more.

She stated the man then conducted the "candy game" in a area of five youngsters.
