India's capital Rises to Toxic Pollution Post Celebrations

On Tuesday morning citizens of the world's most polluted city encountered exposed to extremely polluted air that was classified as the "severe" category.

Extremely High Air Quality Readings

Various sections of the city showed an air quality index over 500, which represents ten times the healthy threshold recommended by the World Health Organization.

In some locations, levels of dangerous airborne particles hit highs of 1800, representing fifteen to twenty times above acceptable standards.

Pyrotechnics Restrictions and Current Changes

Beginning in 2020, officials had implemented a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of pyrotechnics during celebrations due to their major role to the hazardous haze that blankets the capital as the cold season begins.

However earlier this year, the newly elected regional administration petitioned the judicial authority to seek a relaxation of the restrictions.

They proposed allowing "green crackers" – historically questioned by environmentalists as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a compromise between "heritage and public health".

Judicial Verdict and Reality

Much to the frustration of public health and environmental activists, the court complied with the appeal, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be set off during designated time windows throughout the celebrations.

Throughout the festival evening, there was extensive disregard of the designated hours across the capital, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly type.

Numerous air quality sensors throughout the capital registered air quality reaching highest levels around the night hours to extremely hazardous readings observed during Diwali in at least the past three years.

Regional Effects

Extensive ignition of fireworks during the celebrations also initiated a dispute with adjacent Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistani the Punjab region pointing to worsening pollution levels in the city of Lahore on pollutants originating in neighboring India following the celebrations.

Chronic Environmental Issue

The dangerously high concentrations of air contamination in the city have continued as a serious issue for more than 15 years, with the situation showing no improvement.

During Diwali, the amount of dangerous particles in the air has been observed to increase dramatically to significantly exceeding the peak readings ever measured in Beijing, which was previously considered as the planet's dirtiest urban center.

Diverse Pollution Sources

The problem in Delhi is resulting from a combination of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, construction debris, development work, rubbish burning and smoke from crop residue ignition in neighbouring states of neighboring agricultural zones.

Within these states, rural residents regularly ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, creating toxic smog that then gets trapped over the city as colder air sets in.

Medical and Economic Toll

The economic and health consequences on the approximately 33 million residents residing in the capital region is substantial, according to various investigations.

This pollution results in elevated rates of nervous system, cardiovascular and breathing diseases, and can potentially cause malignancies.

The pollution is estimated to be responsible for ten thousand untimely deaths per year in the capital.
